Sales Tips:

Job Search Email Etiquette

The Subject Line:
- The subject line should alert the receiver as to the content of the email.
- Avoid topics like "Hi," "Checking In," "Touching Base," "FYI."
- Instead, write short, concise information in the subject line that informs and may also attract the receiver's interest.
Example Subject Lines:

  1. Sales Trainee Program Inquiry
  2. Account Executive Position Interest
  3. Recent Connection at Sales Career Fair

Use an Appropriate Greeting:
- Always begin the email with a greeting before your message, such as "Hello," or "Good Morning," (Pay attention to different time-zones; recruiters are sometimes out-of-state).
- Avoid "Hi" or "Hey" as these are not professional.

Provide an introduction:
- You should introduce yourself with a first  and  last name so that the receiver is aware of your identity.
- Include your major or year in college.
- It is helpful to provide information on where you found the position you are emailing about (SLC Website, Titan Connections, LinkedIn, referral from career center or SLC, etc.)
- If you met the recruiter in person, state that in your email. It will remind the recruiter that you've already had an encounter together (Career Fair, Sales Career Academy, Info. Session, Workshop, etc.)
Example Introduction:

  1. My name is Miranda Barajas, third-year business student at Cal State University, Fullerton. I was referred to you by the Sales Leadership Center…
  2. My name is Andrew Serrano and I am a business marketing major writing to you regarding the available Account Executive position….
  3. My name is John Vo. I am a graduating senior, business marketing major at Cal State University, Fullerton. We recently met at the Sales Career Academy hosted by the Sales Leadership Center. I was hoping to connect regarding the full-time employment opportunity…

Conversation Closer:
- Don't forget to close the conversation. Just like the sales process, a close is essential to let your receiver know that you completed the communication.
Example Closer:

  1. Thank you for your consideration.
    Best Regards,
    Robert Cerda

  2. Thank you for your time.
    Regards,
    Nathaly Soto

  3. Please let me know how I should proceed...
    Thank you,
    Evelyn Macias

Miscellaneous Job Search Email Etiquette Tips:
- Avoid humor and sarcasm. These are okay in social settings but are not appropriate in an email. They might be interpreted differently than planned or may have an adverse consequence. Remember you are representing yourself as a brand.
- Don't type in all-caps.
- Avoid using emojis or smiley faces.
- Be patient and optimistic. Recruiters are very busy and receive many emails per day, so give them about 5 business days to reply. Feel free to send up a follow-up email after that period to ensure that your interest doesn't go unnoticed.
